Introduction to Clement's Epistle to the Corinthians
- Approximate Date: 80-96AD
- Clement - Fourth bishop of Rome after Peter, Linus, and Anencletus. Probably the same
Clement mentioned in Paul's epistle the the Philippians 4:3.
- The Corinthian church had a history of problems. The apostle Paul had written corrective
letters to them at least twice (I and II Corinthians) around AD 55-60.
- The occasion for Clement's letter was that the
Corinthians had expelled their presbyters without good cause.
- As you read:
- Note Clement's tone toward the Corinthians - is he writing as an equal or as a superior?
- Also note what he does not say and what that might imply. Does he attempt to
defend his apostolic authority or does he assume it is recognized?
- Note the offices he mentions in the church at that time.
- Note also the relationship of works and faith.
- By the time of our first class in April, try to read through at least
Chapter 36 of this epistle.
- It is a rather lengthy work so we may have to overflow into several weeks but at least try to
be ahead in the reading if you can.
